What is the status of my ESTA for travel to the USA?
After filling out the online form for travel to the United States, the applicant must wait a maximum of 72 hours before being able to verify his or her ESTA application. There are three different statuses that may appear as a result of your application:
- The ESTA approved status is the only status that allows you to go to the United States. You can now start thinking about your future stay in the USA and start preparing all your things.
- ESTA pending status may occur and does not necessarily mean that your ESTA will be denied. This status simply means that the U.S. authorities have a lot of applications to process or that a thorough search is being conducted on your file;
- ESTA denied status unfortunately means that you have not received ESTA authorization, it may be a simple error, see the end of our page below to find a solution.
Check ESTA status
If you meet all the requirements for the ESTA document, you should not have any unpleasant surprises. You are a national of a Visa Waiver Program country. You have a biometric or electronic passport. You wish to go to the USA for a tourist stay, a business trip or a transit, for 90 days maximum. Then there is a good chance that your ESTA application will be approved.
To find out if your ESTA application has been accepted and to know your ESTA status, you must have the application number that was sent to you by e-mail and consult the U.S. government website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/individualStatusLookup.
If your application is granted, you should know that it is possible to use your ESTA authorization for two years to go to the USA as long as your passport has not expired. Otherwise, you will have to apply for a new passport and ESTA in order to enter the United States.
What if my ESTA status is denied?
If you log in and find that your ESTA status has been denied, the process to follow differs depending on the reason for the denial.
Indeed, it sometimes happens that the applicant fills in the ESTA form with the wrong number, name or date. For this type of refusal, it is possible to make a new request about ten days after the first one. The amount to be paid will be the same.
If the denial is not due to an error, but because you do not meet the criteria, there is no point in reapplying. The American authorities will refuse your request every time. Please note that a refused ESTA status does not mean that you will never be able to travel to the USA. We recommend that you contact an American embassy to apply for a USA visa. Indeed, it is imperative to get information, because there is a visa for tourism, a visa to work in the United States or to study there.
